From September 15th through October 15th, New York City celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with festivals, parades, museum exhibits, performances, and community events across the five boroughs. The month begins on September 15th to coincide with the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with Mexico and Chile celebrating in the days that follow. It’s a great time to experience the cultures, traditions, and contributions that are a part of NYC every day.
A Month of Culture and Community
Start with a visit to El Museo del Barrio in East Harlem, where exhibitions highlight Latino, Caribbean, and Latin American art. In Washington Heights, the Hispanic Society Museum & Library gives visitors the chance to explore one of the country’s most impressive collections of Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American art, books, and manuscripts.
The celebration also fills New York’s streets with colorful parades. The Mexican Independence Day Parade travels along Madison Avenue from East 38th Street to East 27th Street in Manhattan. The Queens Hispanic Day Parade takes over 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights on Sunday, September 27th, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, marching from 69th Street to 89th Street.
New York Public Library branches also host bilingual storytimes, author talks, dance workshops, and other free programs throughout the month.
