The Morgan Library and Museum is taking a deep dive into a side of Pierre-Auguste Renoir that many people have never seen. His paintings are some of the most recognizable works of Impressionism. This exhibit is a bit different, showcasing his drawings, watercolors, and pastels. Drawing was a large part of Renoir’s process throughout his long career, and this show highlights how he used paper to work through ideas and experiment with composition. The exhibition offers a look at how Renoir created his work behind the scenes, from early academic studies to more personal sketches made later in life.
