Summer in New York City starts to feel different once SummerStage returns to Central Park. The crowds pick up around Rumsey Playfield, people spread out across the park before sunset, and entire evenings start revolving around whoever’s taking the stage that night. It’s one of the city’s most beloved summer pastimes.
SummerStage Returns to Central Park
The 2026 season marks SummerStage’s 40th anniversary, and this year promises another packed lineup of free and ticketed shows to Central Park in Manhattan.
This year’s schedule moves between genres fast. One week features indie rock bands like Spoon and Ratboys. Another brings opera performances from the Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital. Pride Weekend heads into the park through Dreamland, while artists like Laurie Anderson, Mavis Staples, Julieta Venegas, Shaggy, and Angélique Kidjo all appear throughout the summer.
Part of what keeps SummerStage feeling tied to the city is the setting itself. Rumsey Playfield is right inside Central Park near East 71st Street, surrounded by trees and tucked far enough into the park that even larger shows still feel connected to the crowd. As the sun goes down, the lights come up across the stage and the entire area takes on a different energy.
SummerStage has spent four decades becoming part of summer in the city. Free concerts, packed lawns, late sunsets, and music carrying through the park still pull people back every year.
