For one night in June, Fifth Avenue trades all that traffic for crowds going between museums, live music, street performances, and late-night gallery hours. The annual Museum Mile Festival returns on June 9th, and the Upper East Side turns into one long stretch of art, music, and people filling the avenue after dark.
Museum Mile Goes Late Night in NYC
From 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, several of the city’s major cultural institutions open their doors free of charge:
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art
- Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
- Neue Galerie New York
- Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum
- The Jewish Museum
- Museum of the City of New York, which will also feature its new exhibitions The Occupied City and Another Wonderland
- El Museo del Barrio
Outside the museums, the avenue is lively and full of fun all night. Live bands, DJs, chalk artists, performers, and family activities take over the car-free street between 82nd and 110th Streets. It’s kind of a choose-your-own-adventure kind of feel. Some people move block by block and see how much they can fit into the evening, but if sticking to one spot is what you’re looking for, that’s okay too!
Museum Mile always feels a little different once the sun goes down. The crowds spill into the street, the museum doors stay open late, and Fifth Avenue takes on a completely different energy for the night.
