Everyone knows all about those quintessential New York City holiday attractions: The Rockefeller Plaza in all its glory (ahem, that TREE), the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, the displays on Fifth Avenue, seeing Santa at Macy’s, and all those holiday markets. But one of the very best things to do in NYC in December is to take a trip out to Brooklyn to see the lights in Dyker Heights.
The homeowners in Dyker Heights take great pride in their Christmas decor and larger-than-life displays. It’s magical, exciting, and the perfect adventure for the whole family to get into the spirit of the season.
We break down everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.
Where are the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights?
Dyker Heights is a neighborhood in Brooklyn located between Bensonhurst and Bay Ridge.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
Most homes start decorating the weekend after Thanksgiving. We recommend visiting anytime in December until New Year’s Day. The best times to visit are from dusk until 9:00 pm. The lights are usually shut off after that time to give homeowners some privacy into the late evening.
Are Tours Available to See the Lights?
Yes! Bus tours are available from Manhattan, and walking tours are right in Brooklyn. Check out DHCL Tours, A Slice of Brooklyn, and more!
How Do I Get to Dyker Heights?
From the subway, hop on the D Train and get off at 79th St and New Utrecht Ave in Brooklyn. Just know, it’s about a 15-minute walk from there, and the area has a few hills. One quick heads up: traffic and parking are tough, so it’s usually easier to skip the car or give yourself extra time for the walk (or consider a tour from above.)
A Few Extra Tidbits About Your Visit
We highly recommend this experience every single year. It’s really extraordinary, and the whole family will absolutely love it. Keep in mind, this is a residential neighborhood, so please be respectful of the homeowners. As mentioned before, parking is not easy. Consider a tour or using public transportation. Also, it can be extremely chilly this time of year, so bring those extra layers, just in case.
