Shakespeare in the Park is back at the newly renovated Delacorte Theater for another summer season in Central Park. The 2026 lineup includes a new production of Romeo and Juliet, the return of The Winter’s Tale, community events through Public Works, and the revival of the Public Forum series.
Here’s what to know before the season begins.
What Is Shakespeare in the Park?
Shakespeare in the Park is an annual theater program presented by The Public Theater at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.
For more than 45 years, the program has brought free productions of Shakespeare’s work to New York City audiences. More than five million people have attended performances over the years. The stage has also welcomed some of the biggest names in theater and film, including James Earl Jones, Meryl Streep, and Al Pacino.
What’s Happening in 2026?
The 2026 season celebrates another summer at Delacorte Theater, which recently underwent a major restoration project.
The upgraded venue continues to serve as the home of Shakespeare in the Park, which gives audiences access to free performances in the heart of Central Park. The theater remains one of New York City’s most recognizable outdoor performance spaces, and the 2026 schedule brings a mix of Shakespeare classics, community programming, and public events back to the stage.
The Public Theater also continues its long-standing commitment to free access, keeping Shakespeare in the Park available to New Yorkers and visitors throughout the season.
What Productions Are on the Schedule?
The season begins with Romeo and Juliet, directed by Saheem Ali. Performances take place from May 22nd through June 28th.
The production carries an extra layer of interest because Romeo and Juliet has not appeared at the Delacorte in nearly twenty years.
Later in the season, The Winter’s Tale arrives under the direction of Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan. Performance dates are expected at a later time.
A Public Works production will also join the lineup, though additional details have not yet been announced.
Where Does It Take Place?
All performances take place at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.
The theater is accessible through entrances at 81st Street and Central Park West or 79th Street and Fifth Avenue.
How Do Tickets Work?
One of the biggest reasons Shakespeare in the Park is still so popular is simple: tickets are free.
The Public Theater distributes tickets through several methods, including in-person distribution in Central Park, borough distribution events, an in-person lottery at The Public Theater, and a digital lottery through TodayTix. There is also a standby line for available seats.
Supporters who make qualifying donations to The Public Theater can access a limited number of reserved seats. But the majority of tickets are available through the free distribution system.
Shakespeare in the Park returns to Central Park for another season of free performances at the renovated Delacorte Theater. Between Romeo and Juliet, The Winter’s Tale, and a full calendar of additional programming, the 2026 season offers plenty of reasons to make a trip uptown.
