Walk into the American Museum of Natural History, and you expect to see dinosaurs, space, maybe a group gathered around a guide. On the first floor this spring, there’s something else in the mix. Trophies, medals, and championship pieces show up along with the rest of the museum.

It’s not a full sports museum, and it doesn’t try to be. The focus stays on the objects themselves. Here’s what to know.

What is “For the Win: Objects of Sports Excellence”?

“For the Win: Objects of Sports Excellence” is a special exhibition at AMNH that centers on awards tied to sports history.

The exhibition looks at the objects that recognize athletes winning at their given sport. These are trophies handed out at the end of a season. Medals placed around an athlete’s neck. Rings that stay long after the moment passes. Some belong to teams, others to individual athletes, but each one connects to a specific result. And that’s a win.

The scope of this exhibit spans more than 15 sports and roughly 150 years.

Where Is It and When Does It Open?

The exhibition opens on May 15th at the American Museum of Natural History.

It’s located on the first floor inside the Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals, within the Meister Gallery. You don’t need a separate ticket. Entry is included with general admission to the museum.

What’s Actually on Display?

The exhibit’s objects are the ones most people already recognize, even if they haven’t seen them up close. The Vince Lombardi Trophy, given to the NFL Super Bowl champion. One of Jesse Owens’s gold medals from the 1936 Summer Olympics. A 2024 WNBA Championship ring that belongs to Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty. Kevin Durant’s Olympic gold medal from Team USA Basketball. The MLS Cup was awarded to New York City FC.

There are more than 70 objects in total, covering sports like baseball, tennis, boxing, golf, and swimming. It’s interesting to see how these pieces were built and how the materials change over time.

Seeing them together can change your perspective a bit. These are items usually shown for a few minutes on a broadcast or in a photo. Here, they are close enough to touch (but, please don’t.)

What Ties the Exhibit Together?

The exhibition tracks how sports awards have evolved.

Earlier pieces are more traditional. Things like medals, cups, and straightforward designs. As you move forward, the objects become more detailed. Rings have more customization. Trophies take on more sculptural forms. Materials shift, and the craftsmanship becomes part of the story.

Who Would Enjoy This Exhibit?

Simply put: Sports fanatics will love this exhibit.

It also works for anyone already visiting the museum who wants to see something different on the first floor. The objects don’t require much background to understand. You either recognize them or you don’t, and either way, they’re quite a sight to see.

“For the Win: Objects of Sports Excellence” brings a different kind of display to AMNH. Starting May 15th, it adds another stop on the first floor with a special nod to all the sports lovers out there.
