On most Saturdays, New Yorkers spend a good portion of the day navigating traffic, waiting for walk signals, or squeezing onto crowded sidewalks. Summer Streets offers something a little different.

For a handful of Saturdays each summer, major roads across New York City close to vehicle traffic and open to people instead. Cyclists, runners, walkers, families, and curious visitors take over streets that usually look very different. Along the route, you’ll find fitness classes, live performances, art installations, rest stops, and plenty of opportunities to explore the city from a new perspective.

What Is ‘Summer Streets?’

Summer Streets is an annual program organized by the NYC Department of Transportation. On select Saturdays from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, hundreds of blocks close to vehicle traffic and open to the public. It’s refreshing in a way.

Participation is free, and no registration is required. People can join for ten minutes, a few hours, or an entire morning.

The event takes place rain or shine and has become one of New York City’s most recognizable summer traditions.

Why Do People Show Up?

The answer is simple: the streets feel completely different. Summer Streets gives New Yorkers a chance to experience some of the city’s busiest roads without traffic.

Cyclists ride down major avenues, families push strollers through the middle of the street, and groups of friends cover blocks that would normally require a stop at every intersection. The routes themselves are a big part of the appeal.

The 2026 season begins on July 26th in Queens and Staten Island. In Queens, the route follows Vernon Boulevard between 44th Drive and 30th Road along the East River waterfront. Staten Island participants can explore Forest Avenue between Broadway and Bard Avenue.

Manhattan takes over on August 2nd, August 9th, and August 16th with a route that extends from the Brooklyn Bridge to Inwood. The season wraps up on August 23rd in Brooklyn and the Bronx, with routes along Eastern Parkway and Grand Concourse.

What Can You Expect Along the Route?

Every Summer Streets route includes a mix of activities and rest stops.

Fitness classes are a regular part of the schedule, along with live performances and interactive art installations. Community organizations, nonprofits, and local groups also contribute programming throughout the day.

The exact lineup changes from year to year, which means no two Summer Streets seasons look exactly alike.

Transportation partners frequently join the event as well. In recent years, Citi Bike promotions have encouraged even more people to get out and explore the routes on two wheels.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with skipping the activities altogether. Plenty of participants simply enjoy the extra space and the chance to see familiar streets from a different angle.

What Should You Know Before You Go?

Summer Streets takes place from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM on select Saturdays throughout the summer.

Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a water bottle can make a big difference, especially on warmer August mornings.

Route details and activity schedules may vary by borough, so it’s worth checking the NYC DOT website before heading out.

Whether you arrive on foot, by bike, or by subway, it’s easy to spend a few hours exploring.
