Twenty-five years after September 11th, New York City continues to carry the memory of a day that forever changed the city and the nation. As this milestone anniversary approaches, New Yorkers will pause to remember those who were lost while honoring the courage, compassion, and resilience that emerged in the days that followed.
From the annual ceremony at Ground Zero to neighborhood memorials and community tributes across the five boroughs, this September offers meaningful opportunities to reflect, pay respects, and learn more about the people and stories behind one of the most significant moments in New York City’s history.
How New York Will Honor the 25th Anniversary
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is the center of the city’s annual observance. Two reflecting pools stand where the Twin Towers once stood, with the names of every victim engraved in bronze around the edges. The Museum also welcomes visitors throughout the anniversary period, although larger crowds and additional security are expected.
September 6th
The Father Mychal Judge Walk of Remembrance begins at the Father Mychal Judge Memorial at West 31st Street and Seventh Avenue. The annual walk honors the FDNY chaplain who lost his life while ministering to firefighters at the World Trade Center.
September 10th
The Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil takes place at Maimonides Park in Coney Island. The public ceremony honors first responders who lost their lives on September 11th.
Participating FDNY firehouses and EMS stations across New York City will also welcome visitors during the annual Firehouse Open House. Guests can meet firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics while learning more about the Department’s history and mission.
September 11th
The Firefighters Memorial Ceremony at Riverside Drive and West 100th Street honors the 343 FDNY members who lost their lives during the attacks.
On Staten Island, the Postcards Memorial hosts its annual remembrance ceremony for borough residents who died on September 11th.
Just a short walk from the World Trade Center site, FDNY Ten House opens its doors to visitors throughout the day. The nearby FDNY Fire Museum also hosts a wreath-laying ceremony before welcoming guests to explore exhibits dedicated to the Department’s response and recovery efforts.
A 9/11 Tribute at Yankee Stadium
The New York Yankees host the New York Mets on September 11th as part of a three-game Subway Series. A pregame tribute begins at 6:30 PM, followed by first pitch at 7:05 PM. The ceremony honors first responders and remembers those who lost their lives before the game begins.
Attending the Anniversary Events
Most events are open to the public. If you plan to attend events near the Memorial or Lower Manhattan, expect additional security, larger crowds, and temporary street closures. Public transportation is the easiest way to reach most locations.
