Event Color Coordination: How Colors Can Enhance the Guest Experience

There’s a lot to consider when planning your next New York City event or party. The event planner’s checklist of “things to do” is long, but you’ve already tackled the big ones. The guest list is complete. And you’ve booked the venue, hired the best event entertainment, and carefully chosen the perfect theme. Now it’s time to focus on decor and how you’re going to elevate the whole experience for all your guests. Don’t overlook the power of color coordination and how color choices can play a major role in the overall success of your event. The color palette you choose can dramatically change the mood and vibe of the attendee experience. Leave a lasting and memorable impression that will have your attendees raving about your event long after it’s over with these helpful color-choosing tips.

First Things First, the Venue

Before considering your color choices, you need to know what’s happening, color-wise, at the venue you have booked. Venue decor is vastly different depending on many factors. Are you starting with a blank slate of light or neutral colors? Is the venue already highly decorated with bold colors? The last thing you want to do is have the colors at the venue clash with the color coordination you have chosen for the event. Be sure to check out wall colors, fixtures, and window treatments. The venue is a backdrop. Some may need more color to heighten the space, while others may call for colors to complement what’s already there.

Furthermore, What’s the Theme of Your Event?

Color choices will undoubtedly aid in elevating your theme and heighten the overall guest experience. Some designs and themes are easier to lean into, as far as color choices go than others. For holiday events, it’s best to use traditional colors like orange and black for Halloween, red, white, and blue for the Fourth of July, and so on. Pastel and neutral colors are great for bridal and baby showers, whereas bold colors are ideal for milestone birthday parties. If you’re planning an event for a company, it’s always a good idea to go with their color scheme, as it can build a positive association for the guests attending. Additionally, whatever other themed parties you’re planning, the color scheme is there to support and amplify your vision.

Lastly, the Emotions Different Colors Evoke

Embracing a particular theme with traditional colors or enhancing an already decorated venue space can be a bit easier than starting with a blank slate for a private party or event, especially if the client has given you creative freedom. What kind of vibe do you want your event to bring to the guests? How do you want your guests to feel? Don’t underestimate the power of a color scheme and how it can affect their moods and emotions.

Red

Red represents excitement, passion, danger, and intensity. Some popular themed parties that use red as the main color include Moulin Rouge, Burlesque, and Casino Nights.

White

White represents youthfulness, cleanness, and innocence. The color white is great when your event calls for a clean and simple color palette. Accent colors are always encouraged so your event doesn’t look isolating. Highlight white as your main color for launch parties and bridal showers.

Green

Green represents nature, growth, and tranquility. Some great uses for green are nature-inspired events, a minimalistic aesthetic, and for networking events to promote calmness.

Yellow

Yellow represents happiness, warmth, and optimism. Use as an accent color to black and white as too much yellow can be jarring to the eye.

Blue

Blue represents trust, loyalty, dependability, and peacefulness. Use for corporate functions and ice-themed events.

Black

Black represents sophistication, elegance, and power. This trusty color is great for black-tie galas, masquerades, and haunted-themed parties.

Purple

Purple represents royalty, dignity, and wealth. Use for evening and night events to incorporate with the lighting for some added luxury.
